Why would you need to moisturise, nourish, and hydrate your hair?
Well, before we dive into that question, let’s break it down and look at it from different angles.
What is Hair?
Hair is a protein filament which grows from follicles found in the dermis. Once the hair grows through the skin’s surface, the strand of hair is considered as ‘dead’ hair. This explains why we are not in pain when we cut our hair or perform various forms of treatments, but we do feel pain when a strand of hair is pulled out of the dermis.
What is hydration?
Hydration is the process of replenishing the water in the body. What role does hydration play in hair care? Just as all living things need water, so does our hair. Hydration can come from the water or other fluids that we drink, the food we eat, water absorption from our body, washing our hair and of course from the hair products we use. Just as we hydrate, so we also dehydrate. Dehydration occurs through exercise, bladder and bowel eliminations and through sweating. So, what’s the application in hair care, you ask. Well, I’m super excited to share with you the benefits of hydration for hair care.
The importance of hydration for hair care.
Hydration in hair care can be achieved through moisturising which nourishes the hair strands. No matter your hair type, it still needs to be moisturised. The absorption rate for different hair types varies due to the texture, type, and porosity. Hair porosity is the absorption and retaining power of the hair strands. Hair porosity ranges from low, medium to high. Low porosity is where the hair cuticles are tighter. This makes the hair less able to absorb moisture and harder to lose moisture. High porosity is the opposite, where the hair cuticles are open and easily absorb and lose moisture. Because it is quite common for a head of hair to have more than one hair porosity, best practice is to not make hair porosity the determining factor when selecting your hair products. It is far more helpful to be guided by the properties of the product. Because AfroShe products have a balanced formulation they are versatile and perfectly able to address the various needs of wavy, curly, kinky coily and locs hair. Moisturising can be easily achieved using a combination of the following methods.
Method 1: Water/ Liquid - Use water/ liquid and or water-based products
Method 2: Oils/ Oil-Water based products. Suggested AfroShe products include HAIR SPRITZ, HAIR & SCALP OIL & HAIR MILK.
Method 3: Moisture Sealants (styling products) – Use creams, butters, stylers or gels. Suggested AfroShe products include Shea Butter Curl Styler, Creamy Hair Butter, Hair Butter, Curl It Moisturising Hair Gel (light hold or medium/strong hold).
Depending on the results you are after, AfroShe HAIR SPRITZ can be used as a stand-alone product or with all three methods.
